Glancing behind him, he saw Antfrost with Bad close behind. He had no idea where George or Sapnap were, but they were going to be there soon. Gluing his eyes back onto the path in front of him, he gave himself a little extra speed and threw himself to the ground, rolling under a low tree branch. Quickly jumping back to his feet, He made his way towards a nearby mountain which towered over the dense oak forest that he was currently traversing.
Reaching the foot of the mountain, he stumbled and began his ascent. It was relatively easy, really more tiring than hard. Not yet. Once he finally reached the summit of the mountain, he gave his arms a much needed break and started to run. He stumbled, but quickly and easily caught himself.
Figuring he could spare the extra second, he turned behind him. Antfrost and Bad were much closer than expected, and wearing a full set of iron gear. He spotted Sapnap and George farther behind, clearing the edge of the mountain.
Turning forwards, he picked up speed, forcing his legs to pump faster. There was a steep drop, a cliff if you jumped. Readying his bucket in his hotbar, he launched himself off the edge, steadying himself in the air to ensure a clean landing.
Right before Dream hit the ground, he emptied the iron bucket beneath his feet, the water spilling out and cushioning his fall. It was getting a little stale at this point and he could no longer feel his legs.
He could hear the distant yells of the hunters from the top of the cliffs, cursing as Dream made an escape. He turned and walked backwards, watching Bad and Antfrost throw a fit at the top, their views partly obscured by the cliff face. Dream let out a wheeze, followed by a cheer. Surely, this was his break.
At least, that's what he thought until he saw a boat go careening off the edge, blocking out the sun as it plummeted towards the earth. Dream felt his heart drop as he saw the gleam of an iron axe, along with Sapnaps bandana. He immediately began running again, throwing his own boat into the water and pushing off from the sand.
A scorching pain raced through dreams muscles as he began to row, the strain being almost too much. Right now, it was being able to use his arms tomorrow or keeping his life. The decision was easy, so he kept rowing. The ocean floor quickly disappeared from his view as Dream rowed farther from shore, the hunters on the mountain quickly becoming smaller dots.
Sapnap, however, was right on his tail, pushing his own boat off the beach and rowing towards him with an equal, almost overpowering speed. Dream was weak and tired, Sapnap was out for blood. With a groan of pain, Dream forced his eyes shut and his arms to keep rowing. That was at least, until he heard a heavy splash.
He looked towards Sapnap, who had a loaded crossbow aiming for him again. Dream yelped, sharply steering his boat to the side as the arrow hit the water where he was merely seconds ago. He looked back up at Sapnap, who seemed to have ditched his crossbow and drawn his normal bow.
The arrow zipped straight towards Dream, sinking into the side of his boat. In his flailed surprise, he capsized his own boat and fell into the water. The boat was now a lost cause, so Dream sucked in a breath and dove down beneath the surface. To his demise, arrows slowly spiraled down beside him- luckily few and far between. He was spiraling overhead, waiting for Dream to surface for air. His prey. Though his lungs felt as they were about to burst, Dream kicked his legs and pumped his arms to glide through the water.
He had to surface, or he would drown. It was that or face Sapnap, and the choice was quite easy. He forced himself to the surface, gasping for air. He spun, seeing Sapnap in his angry glory with a now empty crossbow primed in his hands. He flung it back into his boat, and dove into the water with his axe above his head.
Dream surfaced briefly, before clamoring to Sapnaps boat and gripping the oars. He began to row before he felt the side of the boat sag with a newfound weight. It was beyond Dream how he could still swim, but that was a question for another day.
Dream twisted, not wasting a moment. He yanked the axe from Sapnap, causing him to let out a surprised yell as his weapon was stripped from his clutches. Dream raised the axe above his head, then let it swing down towards Sapnap. Dream saw his eyes widen in fear as the axe came down, causing Sapnap to swing out of the way, narrowly missing the deadly blade. Dream took the short moment where the contact was broken to keep rowing, not looking back as he pumped his arms.
Dream let out a holler of joy, having narrowly escaped his pursuers. Sapnap was ditched far from shore, and it would be more than a few minutes for the other hunters to find him. Dream had finally won. Though he knew he would have more encounters after this moment, he was still happy with himself.
As the sun slowly began its descent past the horizon, he finally smiled. It would be a much needed break for Dream, who finally slowed his rowing. He let the soft sound of the water splashing against his boat soothe him as he moved slowly across the ocean.
Dream collapsed and packed up his stolen boat and tools, taking an unsteady step onto the wet beach. The water licked at his boots, which in turn left deep footsteps in the damp sand as he walked. The new area was already inviting, the thick trees offering ample protection and hiding from the hunters.
All he had to do was find a discreet place to set up camp, which would be easy. The sun slowly dipped below the horizon, leaving the sky an empty shade of dark blue with thin streams of orange. From this Dream could tell he had been moving for shy of a few hours, and was probably well enough away from the hunters.
He finally let himself stop at a nearby tree, his shoulder still bleeding and split open from the encounter with Sapnap. Dried blood covered his arm, which Dream quickly cleaned up with his bucketed water. He dug through his bag, finding only an apple which he collected back with the first of his wood. Quickly biting into and polishing off the apple, Dream let out a shaky sigh as the wound on his shoulder slowly stitched up. Dream stared at his shoulder for a minute longer, than swung his bag back over his waist as he kept walking.
He just had to keep going until he finally found a suitable place to lay his head. Dreams eyelids felt heavy as he finally sat down for the first time all day. He exhaled until his lungs were completely empty, then sucked in the longest breath he took all day. He opened his tired eyes, staring at the ground in front of him.
Though he was exhausted from evading his hunters all day, his hunger overpowered his desperate need to go to sleep. Searching his bag, Dream sighed with relief as he discovered a single slab of raw steak sitting at the side, not even being sure beforehand if he had any leftover food from the first pursuit.
He took some logs from his pack and set up a quick and dirty campfire, lighting the pyramid of wood with his flint and steel before sitting back to watch the flames quickly engulf the pile and climb higher. Disregarding the fact that the hunters could see this and track him, Dream eagerly set his meat beside the campfire to cook. Dream sat there, hugging his legs as he soaked in the heat from the flames. He watched gingerly as small embers were pushed up into the sky, blending in with the stars before quickly fading away.
The smoke billowed up in tidy clouds, dispersing along with the branches on the trees. He sighed, letting his eyes flicker back down to the steak which surprisingly, was almost completely cooked. He leaned back to grab his sword, shivering as the heat of the campfire was pulled away. He bit his bottom lip, silently yelling at himself for being stupid. Though he was there now, he was also without the only thing that would keep him warm but still hidden. Dream plunged the tip of his sword into the steak, waving it around for it to cool and trying to ignore what that same sword had been through only hours earlier.
It was either this, wait, or burn his hands. He preferred the former. He gingerly tested the heat of the meat before taking it off with his hands and quickly devouring the entire thing, licking off the tips of his fingers whilst trying to savor every last scrap of meat.
He sat back, dissatisfied. The single steak was nowhere near enough to satisfy the hunger he had gained throughout the day, and his stomach loudly objected to the lack of more food. With a sigh, Dream emptied his water bucket out over the flames and sat back, watching the last few embers flicker out.
Dream sat there, tilting his head all the way back to gaze at the stars. Every time he closed his eyes he felt he was going to topple over, so he took one more deep breath before lowering himself to the ground. Digging through his bag he found a few large clumps of wool from a few sheep he killed for food, the mutton sadly long gone. He tried to spread it out into some sort of makeshift sleeping pad, ending up with a thin layer of wool splayed out unevenly over the ground.
Dream was about to lay down, until he heard a small but nearby sound. Immediately perking up, he faced the direction of the noise and equipped his sword. Keeping his breathing quiet, Dream listened. He swallowed nervously, gripping the handle of the sword.
The sound happened again, this time easily identifiable. It was the snapping of a stick, followed by what sounded like slow, calculated footsteps crunching on the few fallen leaves.
He lowered his stance, eyes locked on the direction of the sound. A silhouette appeared, hardly visible through the trees but moving closer. However, they would soon be close enough for Dream to strike. Dream launched himself forwards, swinging the sword down. Dream was ready to swing again and bring the blade down, before he heard a familiar voice.
His goggles had fallen and remained on the ground, leaving his eyes exposed. He looked terrified, basically giving the tree behind him a hug. Dream exhaled, letting the tension in his limbs loose. To help. Dream licked his lips, turning and making his way towards his extinguished campfire, still on edge. He watched George closely as he joined him by the firepit, before sitting down.
George joined him on the ground, still looking frightened. He pulled a few dark pieces out of his bag, laying them out in between the two of them. Dream smiled, delighted. He quickly took the bread, wolfing down two of the 4 loaves in a few quick and eager gulps. He wiped off his mouth with the back of his hand, licking his lips. The two sat there, neither speaking. The only sounds that interrupted the silence were the chirps of nearby crickets and the subtle rustling of the trees.
George said nothing for a moment, his expression twisting as if Dream had just grown another head. He sat there for a few seconds, quietly scowling before speaking again. No catches, no nothing. Nothing important, anyways. Dream frowned, about to ask more, but George spoke first. Dream half expected it to somehow be a loaded crossbow ready to pierce his heart, but it instead was revealed as a bundled up piece of cloth.
George handed it to him, Dream then curiously letting it unfurl in his hands. He squinted at it for a moment before quickly recognizing what it was. Mexican dads be like. Spwcial Ede birde.
