In this sequel to The Way to Nicaea, Fr John Behr turns his attention to the fourth century, the era in which Christian theology was formulated as the Nicene faith, the common heritage of most Christians to this day.Engaging the best of modern scholarship, Behr provides a series of original, comprehensive, and insightful sketches of the theology of the key protagonists of the Nicene faith, presenting a powerful vision of Christian theology, centered upon Christ and his Passion. The emphasis is on derivation of the Son from the substance of the Father. Stead, Philosophy in Christian Antiquity, Cambridge, , chaps. Hanson follows Prestige, ibid.Alston, Substance and the Trinity, in S. Davis, D. Kendall, G. The distinction of Father, Son and Holy Spirit is presupposed, but there is no ontological framework carrying this distinction. The objective of the creed is limited to a rebuttal of Arius. However, there is clearly the beginning of an ontology. The creed does not disallow a future proposal that the Son is an hypostasis or that there are three hypostases in the Godhead — the creed has an open place for such an elaboration. Neither does it exclude a future elaboration of the ontological unity of the Godhead; in fact, as we shall argue below, the use of homoousios, however vague or ambiguous this term was at the time of Nicaea , is a significant placeholder for developing an expression of the ontological unity of the Godhead.Indeed, it expresses something of an ontological unity. All that the creed prohibits is the derivation of the Son from any other ousia than the Father. Homoousios Consubstantial This term is probably the most contentious of the terms in the Nicene Creed for a variety of reasons. There is evidence for contention at the time of Nicaea and later during the doctrinal debates of the s CE. It is a key ontological claim that the Son is consubstantial with the Father, but exactly how the term was understood at Nicaea in the light of both its secular and religious usage is unclear. The later 4c. Judged in this light, at the time of Nicaea, the term can be seen as a placeholder in a creed awaiting substantive theological content. The theological conflict over the term in the s can be seen as a process of trial and error in supplying an acceptable content. The term survived and was included in the creed associated with Constantinople CE; in a sense, then, it proved an effective placeholder for a theology that finally emerged at Constantinople. The term has little documented theological usage prior to CE. Prestige, ibid. For Arius, the Son was a creature and not of the same substance as the Father. Instead, we have illustrated the Scholastic negative method in defining God — the Son is not of any other substance than the Father and God is not a material substance. The inclusion of the term in the Nicene Creed was innovative, and the innovation was viewed with suspicion. The fact that the term was included, despite this suspicion illustrated by Eusebius , is a measure of its importance. It is at this time that the Antioch condemnation is used rhetorically by the anti- Nicene groups at the Sirmium councils of CE, arguing that the Antioch decision should bind the church. At Antioch the context of exclusion was inadmissible material implications; at Nicaea the context of inclusion was an opposition to an Arian creature anthropomorphism. Doubtless, the rhetorical demands of the s and the opposition of the Homean party required such a spin. For example, it is beyond the scope of this paper to consider the possibility that the term is motivated by the Western doctrine of una substantia. On this see G. If the homoousion posit was initially directed against creature anthropomorphism,61 it was later held to harbour modalist views of the Godhead. A consideration of this issue requires that we investigate later developments in the Arian controversy. Arianism One measure that we can apply in our assessment of the theological achievement of the Nicene Creed is to examine how its credal formulations fared during the period CE. Pressure was brought to bear by various parties in the East and West on the orthodox doctrine, and the survival of the Nicene Creed during this period is therefore a good indication of its lasting achievement. The consensus of scholarship is that Arius formed no party in the church neither did he form a school. His theology was a catalyst for a controversy that assumed a life beyond Arius. Arius sought support against Alexander, and received support from figures such as Eusebius of Nicomedia63 and Eusebius of Caesarea. For a list and evaluation see R. Chadwick, op. The objective of the Dedication Council was to affirm the orthodoxy of the East over against Western opinion.Four documents conventionally known as Antioch are associated with the Council, although not all emanate from its proceedings. The documents illustrate ambivalence in respect to both Arian and Nicene views. This statement gives a classic Origenist economic expression to the unity of the trinity - they are one in agreement , and is in keeping with the typical Eastern emphasis on the threeness of the trinity.Such a statement pulls back from the beginnings of the ontology that was expressed at Nicaea. However, even though the Dedication Council did not re-affirm Nicaea, it did not subscribe to Arianism. One of the drivers for the multiplication of explanatory clauses in the typical credal framework is the attempt to overcome ambiguity in clauses. On the other hand, it should be remembered that the standard way to achieve unity in an ecumenical context is to express doctrine at a suitable level of generality so that all parties can agree the formula. What we see in the documents of the Dedication Council is a middle way. The Dedication Council illustrates that the East were prepared to settle the question of the co-existence of the Father and Son, but they were unwilling to embrace the ontology however indeterminate of the Nicene Creed. The middle way offered to the West was that the Son was like in substance to the Father. The credal position of this council is significant as a benchmark. It is referenced by a number of later councils. While every denomination has a different theological stand point, this list is to provide an easily accessible resource for finding and downloading the specific confession or creed you are looking for.
